IVF Due Date Calculator – What’s Your Date?
IVF or In vitro fertilization is one of the assisted reproductive techniques available today. In this procedure, one or more mature oocytes are removed from a woman’s ovary by laparoscopy and fertilized by exposure to sperm under laboratory conditions outside the woman’s body. About 40 hours after fertilization, the laboratory-grown fertilized ova are inserted into the woman’s uterus, where ideally one ore more of them will implant and grow.
IVF Success rates have said to be as high as 65% in the US. This is very encouraging as with advances in technology and medical science this is only going to get higher. I recommended using acupuncture for IVF treatments.
Who uses IVF?
Ivf is most often used for couples who have not been able to conceive because the woman has blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. It is also used when the man has oligospermia or a low sperm count. It may also be helpful to couples with an absence of the good quality cervical mucus, which prevent sperm from travelling to or entering the cervix, or antisperm antibodies cause immobilization of sperm. Those with unexplained infertility may also benefit from this procedure.
The IVF Procedure
In order to accurately calculate your expected delivery date after an IVF, it is important to understand first what are the processes that are involved in this procedure.
Before the procedure, the woman is generally given hormones that help stimulate ovulation. This signals her body to release the eggs which will be harvested for fertilization. Once fertilization occurs, the mature oocytes are extracted by inserting a needle intravaginally. Guided by ultrasound, the eggs are harvested and incubated for at least 8 hours to ensure viability. In the meantime, the partner produces fresh sperm. These are then mixed with the oocytes in order for fertilization to occur.
Once fertilization has taken place, the zygotes are examined and, if normal, a chosen number are placed back into the uterine cavity through the means of a thin catheter in order for normal pregnancy to occur. More than one fertilized egg is placed back inside the uterus to ensure viability of eggs. If the couple wishes to have just one egg, all other eggs can be extracted after ensuring that the egg that is left behind will proceed to a normal pregnancy.
IVF Due Date Calculator
There are several ways to calculate for your expected delivery dates. These are based on which days you are most sure about in cases wherein you forgot to keep track of other important dates. We will discuss IVF due date calculators at the end.
When you know the date of egg retrieval, ovulation or insemination:
You should start on the day the eggs were harvested for fertilization. This is equivalent to the day of ovulation. Then, subtract 15 days from the fertilization date. The difference gives us the theoretical date for your last menstruation. Once you have identified this date, add 40 weeks to calculate for your expected day of confinement. This week represents the possible delivery day for your baby.
When you know the first day of your last menstrual period:
First you have to know the date of the first day of your last menstrual cycle as well as the length of your regular cycle. This will be the basis for you to then add 40 weeks and proceed to the step as indicated above.
When using replacement for frozen thawed embryo (3 days):
You can do this by subtracting 17 days to the day of the embryo replacement. The resulting figure represents the first day of you last menstrual period. Proceed to adding 40 weeks to this figure to count for the expected day of confinement.
When using replacement for frozen thawed embryo (Blastocyst):
Subtract 19 days to the day of the embryo replacement. This amount represents the first day of the last menstrual period. Then add 40 weeks to compute for the delivery date.
About The IVF Due Date Calculator
Aside from manually calculating the dates yourself, you can always go to several fertility websites (or IVF forums) which offer programs that help you calculate the dates. Bear in mind that these figures only represent an estimate of the dates – and only about 5% of women proceed to have these dates exactly as the day of their delivery – so an IVF due date calculator is not going to be very accurate.
In addition, there are several factors which also influence the efficacy of IVF. Such factors include maturity of eggs, age of the woman, conditions of the eggs and sperm, number of embryos transferred and other causes of infertility.
